Cirrus Monthly Proficiency Program
Terrain Avoidance

Flight Segment

Objectives

The flight portion for the month of June is intended to increase your awareness of CFIT while increasing your overall flight safety and proficiency. You should apply the information of the ground segment to your daily flight operations.

Using the suggested pre-flight and operational procedures from the ground segment you will plan and execute one VFR/IFR cross-country using Victor Airways and one VFR/IFR cross country using GPS Direct. The Garmin flight plan function should be used for navigation on Victor Airways.

Special emphasis should be placed on terrain avoidance and adhering to MEAs, MORAs and other applicable altitudes. If a round trip cross-country is planned, use Victor Airways for the first leg and use GPS Direct for the return leg.

You should continue to maintain good personal and weather risk assessment as outlined in Section 13 of the Customer Training Guide.

  • Apply the pre-flight risks assessment to the flight, including any adjustments for Initial Operating Experience (IOE)

  • 1st Cross Country using Victor Airways:
  • Obtain a thorough weather briefing for the route
  • Define best route considering terrain, weather, usable fuel, shortest distance
  • Review all published altitudes along route (MEA, MOCA, MCA…)
  • Determine best altitude for flight considering terrain, clouds bases and tops, winds aloft, icing, airplane performance
  • Plan your flight and file a flight plan for the trip
  • If Instrument Rated
  • One practice or actual precision IAP, autopilot coupled

  • 2nd Cross Country using GPS Direct-To:
  • Obtain a thorough weather briefing for the route
  • Define terrain hazards along direct-to route (ground elevation, towers…)
  • Review all published altitudes along route (MEF, MORA or OROCA if using Jepessen)
  • Determine best altitude for the route considering terrain, clouds bases or tops, winds aloft, icing, airplane performance
  • Plan flight and file a flight plan for the route
  • If Instrument Rated
  • One practice or actual non-precision IAP, hand flown

  • Six take-offs and landings:
  • If it is expected that only two flights will be made that month, make three landings at each airport.

General Currency Activity for June
All pilots will do a minimum of:

  1. 6 take-offs and landings
  2. If instrument rated, 1 practice or actual precision instrument approach procedure, autopilot coupled
  3. 1 practice or actual non-precision instrument approach procedure, hand-flown
